Segmentation Fault when compiling GUI pgms (SOLVED)

Hi all,

The problem I'm having is as follows (Debian 10 64 bit):
(BaCon version 4.6.1 on Linux x86_64 - (c) Peter van Eerten - MIT License.)

- If I compile my pgm with:
bacon mypgm.bac

It compiles but when I try to run it, it prints out: "Gtk library not found!"
And when I do a ldd on my compiled program, the Gtk libs are not listed.
It's like it's made a cli app, even though I specified "hug.bac".
(BTW cli only programs compiled with bacon, work perfectly).

If I compile with:

bacon -l:libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 mypgm.bac
It returns:

bacon -l:libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 mypgm.bac

If I then run a ldd on my compiled pgm, sure enough all the libs/dependencies are listed
but when I run it, there is always a segmentation fault.
I have even tried the gui examples on the bacon website, same problem.
There are 52 dependencies listed, seems a lot for such a simple gui program.

Have also confirmed that the resulting compiled pgm is 64 bit:
file ./mypgm
"ELF 64-bit LSB pie executable"
and double checking that byte 5 in the executable
is indeed a value of 2, which indicates 64 bit.

I get this when I run gdb:

Have checked that the GTK lib is 64 bit (see below - output from ldconfig)
and that the GTK libraries are in my LD path.

ldconfig -p | grep libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 (libc6,x86-64) => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
Have also updated the LD cache with ldconfig.

The pgm I'm trying is very simple:
(If it's any help, the resulting executable size is 389.6 KB)

As I follow up to my previous post, I decided to re-install Bacon
with the recommended make and make install commands.

./configure --enable-gui-gtk

Compiles OK but spits this out...

Done, program 'bacon.bac' ready.
strip build/bacon
Skipping BaConGUI for GTK.
Skipping BaConGUI for FLTK.
Skipping BaConGUI for TK.

Why would it skip BaConGUI for GTK?
I specifically typed --enable-gui-gtk

Could this be a hint as to what the problem may be?

Hi paulov,

In recent distributions there seems to be a change in the way GTK is being packaged. It leads to various problems, like dependency problems en seg faults.

See also the previous forum threads here and here.

These issues have been fixed in BaCon 4.7.1.

I copied and pasted your sample program and it works fine for me when using 4.7.1.

As to running the './configure' script, please make sure you have the correct development packages on your system. The './configure' script tries to detect these so it can build the GTK version of the small editor. But it has no relation to the issue you are experiencing.

So please try using BaCon 4.7.1 and let us know your results.

Thank you alexfish and @pjot for your input.

After alexfish mentioned Bacon 4.7, that is exactly what I tried and the small editor then did compile and is working.
However, I still get the segmentation errors.

@pjot I had read the first link you posted but will now read the second, lots of valuable info there to try out.
Will try and revert back. 
I'm suspecting that Debian is at fault as many things are not even in the current official repos.

In the meantime as a work around, I compile my pgms for the CLI only, then wrap them in GTKdialog scripts.
A bit clunky but gets the job done.

Will update here as to my progress.

Hi paulov,

Please note that linking with GTK as used by the './configure' script is a different thing compared to importing functions from a library as used by HUG.

As you an read in the 4.7.1 beta CHANGES there is an important fix in the IMPORT statement, which is used by the HUG wrapper to access GTK.

So I would not be surprised if 4.7.1 would fix your issue.

Anyway, good to see you have found a workaround.

UPDATE:

So I have now tried Bacon versions 3.7, 4.6.1 and 4.7.1 and they all will compile cli pgms
but when it comes to gui (gtk2) always a seg fault.

Funny thing is that when I do a ldd on the compiled gui pgms, it shows that all dependencies are satisfied.
Over and above, I use gtkdialog which has pretty much all the same dependencies and that works perfectly.

So there must be a problem or combination of problems between Debian 10 and Bacon.
Wonder if anyone with Debian 10 has managed to successfully compile a gui pgm.

So for now, going to throw in the towel and move on.

That' s too bad to hear. As a matter of fact, I am writing this post in Debian 10 and can compile and run your HUG program fine.

No problem whatsoever. You also might try to obtain the latest 'hug.bac' and recompile:

If this does not work then I am not sure what has screwed up your installation. Unfortunately I cannot reproduce your segfault on Debian 10.

Hi Paulov,

Looking over the whole thread, the problem is most likely that you are compiling with this line:

bacon -l:libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 mypgm.bac


However, you should be compiling as follows:

bacon mypgm.bac


As I have mentioned earlier, HUG imports the GTK functions. So you do not need to link your program to GTK.

I have tried both ways and only tried using 

-l:libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
as a possible workaround when I got seg faults compiling the normal way, i.e.

bacon mypgm.bac

EDIT:   

Running gdb, it seems like the problem could be with libgobject-2.0.so.0
(can't say I completely understand all the output from gdb).

Please note that the pgm that I ran thru gdb was compiled simply with: 

bacon mypgm.bac

The GDB output does not show much detail, but it seems to give a hunch about the dlopen API from libc. This API is used heavily by the IMPORT statement.

But if you have time, it is possible to debug this problem in a more sensible way.

First, compile your demo program from the first post as follows:

# bacon -y -p -o -g -@ mypgm.bac


Then, please use the valgrind tool to run the resulting binary:

# valgrind ./mypgm


You may need to install 'valgrind' first, it is in the Debian repos by default (sudo apt install valgrind).

If you can show the output from valgrind then it will show a lot more about memory allocations.

Hi Peter,

OK, started from scratch again, installed the latest Bacon and ran the following:

./configure --enable-gui-allFollowed by "make" then "sudo make install".
All went fine.

As I mentioned before, all dependencies are loaded but when I compile a GUI pgm with the BaconGUI GTK,
I can see that it does not make a GUI pgm and this is confirmed when I try to run it.
It says:

"Gtk library not found!........."
(Note that I have added the extra dots in hug.bac confirm that is was being found and read, it is).
This is also confirmed when I run "valgrind ./gui1", shown below:

Thanks Paulov,

Your steps enlighten the situation a bit. Let's look at it step by step.

(1) This is all OK and is supposed to work. A plain compile as in 'bacon mypgm.bac' is sufficient for HUG. The reason for this is that HUG accesses the GTK libraries solely by using the libC dlopen API.

It means that the library path should be in order and that 'ldconfig -p' should show the GTK2 library. Which it does, as you have demonstrated in your first post.


(2) When you compile with explicit linking to GTK2, while the program also tries to access GTK using the dlopen API, then in fact the dlopen API finds the library linked to itself, and then tries to open itself. However, no symbols are exported from the binary itself, and therefore, the subsequent dlsym causes a segfault.

So why the segfault is happening when explicitly linking with the GTK2 library, that is something to be expected. It simply will never work.

Let's go back to situation (1) where the compiling steps are correct, but where also the message 'Gtk library not found!' pops up. This is the original problem.

Also, let's make sure that the starting position is in order. In your last post I can see that Valgrind mentions:

So, did you install BaCon 4.7 or did you install BaCon 4.7.1 ?

This is important to know, as the 'Gtk library not found!' message has occurred before and should have been fixed in BaCon 4.7.1.

Can you confirm that you actually are using 4.7.1 in a plain compile of your HUG program (so no explicit link to an external GTK library)?

You can see your current version by using 'bacon -v'.

All dependencies and even GTK2 headers are installed on my system as any GTKdialog script works
and a compile with C (using GTK2) also works, just not Bacon for some reason.
